Royal Caribbean Cruises for Guests with Special Needs

Royal Caribbean believes in accessibility for all and has created their Accessible Seas program to show their commitment to provide the most accessible cruise vacation experience to guests with disabilities and special needs. To do so they have outfitted their ships with a wide variety of features designed to give access to guests who have mobile disabilities, visual impairments, hearing disabilities and other disabilities including children with disabilities, people of short stature and individuals with cognitive, intellectual and development disabilities.

You must notify Royal Caribbean at least 60 days in advance if you need to obtain sign language interpretation services.

30 days advance notice must be given for the following:

  • Raised toilet seat
  • Commode chair
  • Shower stool
  • Transfer bench
  • Service animal relief area
  • Large print materials
  • TTY
  • Visual-tactile alert system
  • Assistive listening device
  • Medical refrigerator
  • Sharp's container

Royal Caribbean provides complimentary wheelchair assistance for embarkation and disembarkation only. If you would like to have a wheelchair or scooter during the cruise, you are welcome to bring your own or rent one from of the companies below who will deliver it your stateroom on the ship:

Wheelchairs, mobility scooters and other assistive devices may be brought and used onboard Royal Caribbean ships. Segways may not be used due to safety reasons.

Mobility scooters must be stored and recharged in your stateroom so fire doors, corridors and elevator lobbies are kept clear for emergency evacuation. When parked throughout the ship, they must be parked out of the way to allow safe and easy access by other guests and crewmembers. Assistive devices should fit through a standard stateroom entry doorway which is at least 23 inches wide. Accessible staterooms with 23 inch wide doorways available and may accommodate larger devices. If you have an assistive device larger than 32 inches wide, please contact Royal Caribbean’s Access Department for assistance. Note: Crewmembers are not permitted to lift assistive devices.

Special services are provided for guests with special mobility needs including:

  • Early boarding
  • Cruise transfers utilizing a specialized bus or van with a lift or ramp
  • Boarding and departure assistance
  • Scooter access
  • Lifts for one pool and one whirlpool on each ship in the fleet
  • Accessible Blackjack tables and slot machines in the casino
  • Accessible Guest Relations Desk

Royal Caribbean offers a variety of accessible staterooms throughout their ships. These accessible staterooms feature:

  • Stateroom & bathroom door width: at least 32 inches
  • Automatic stateroom doors on Radiance-class ships
  • No stateroom doorway threshold
  • Lowered closet rods and safes
  • Lowered sink and vanity
  • Ramped bathroom doorway thresholds
  • Roll-in showers with grab bars
  • Fold-down shower seat and hand-held shower head
  • Raised toilet seats – most between 17" to 19" high
  • 5-foot turning radius in sleeping, sitting and bathroom areas for easy maneuverability
  • Accessible balconies (select staterooms)
  • Most located near elevators

Royal Caribbean guests who are deaf or hard of hearing can also enjoy an immersive cruise experience and peace of mind, thanks to features like visual alerts, sign language interpreters and captions. Some of these features include:

  • Portable hearing room kits that provide visual and tactile alerts for door knocking, telephone ringing, alarm clock and smoke detector.
  • TTY (Teletypewriter) that interfaces with Guest Relations Desk TTY to better meet all in-stateroom needs.
  • Amplified telephones in staterooms and public areas
  • Assistive Listening System (ALS) available in the Main theater on all ships, Studio B on Voyager, Freedom and Oasis-class ships, AquaTheater on Oasis-class ships
  • Sign Language interpreters** (available on a shared basis to guests who utilize American Sign Language as their primary means of communication)
  • Closed-captioned televisions in all staterooms fleetwide. Closed captioning provided on select programs

Please note that Royal Caribbean must be notified at least 30 days prior to sailing for some of these specialized features and they must be notified at least 60 days in advance to ensure interpreter services. Requests are subject to availability of interpreters. Sign language interpreting services are provided on cruises that depart from and return to the U.S. and Canada.

For guests with visual disabilities, Royal Caribbean International® has worked to incorporate Braille wherever possible, including but not limited to: staterooms, staircase handrails and public areas. Additionally, their crew and staff are on hand to assist by reading menus and signage or any other way they can make the guests’ cruise vacation experience even more exceptional.

Here are some of the features that can aid guests with visual impairments:

  • Service dogs welcome onboard – a 4 x 4 foot relief area* with cypress mulch will be provided
  • Braille/tactile signage
  • Braille/tactile elevator buttons and audio call signs
  • Braille deck numbers on staircase handrails
  • Menus and Daily Cruise Compass available in large-print*
  • Qualified Readers
  • Orientation tours

* Royal Caribbean must be notified at least 30 days prior to sailing

Guests requiring continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis are welcome to board all Royal Caribbean International® vessels. However, Royal Caribbean does not have the ability to assist or administer hemo-dialysis treatments. Those guests using peritoneal dialysis should have all solutions and equipment needed to perform the dialysis delivered to the vessel on the day of sailing at least two hours prior to sailing. All types of oxygen are permitted onboard. Royal Caribbean must be notified in advance as to the quantity, type and delivery schedule. Each vessel has a different storage policy; however, you will be able to keep some or all of your cylinders in the stateroom.

Royal Caribbean welcomes guests with cognitive, intellectual and development disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and Alzheimer's disease. Upon request, every effort will be made to provide reasonable accommodations that will meet the needs of guests with these disabilities. Some of these accommodations can include:

  • Early boarding
  • Boarding and departure assistance
  • Early disembarkation
  • Special dietary accommodations

Royal Caribbean welcomes children with disabilities, especially in their fun-filled Adventure Ocean program. Upon request, every effort will be made to provide reasonable accommodations that will meet the needs of children with disabilities. Some of these accommodations can include:

  • Adventure Ocean grouping by ability (rather than age)
  • Adventure Ocean toilet-trained policy exception
  • Pagers for parents of children in Adventure Ocean program
  • Baby-sitting services

Accommodations for guests with special needs can vary by cruise line and by ship and changes can be made at any time without notice. It is important that you advise your agent at the time of booking about any disabilities or special requirements that you may have so that your needs can be assessed accordingly.
